Boys' First Birthday

I can't believe it's been 2 weeks since I've blogged last. Although, I don't know why I'm surprised, it's been crazy here the past couple of weeks. The boys turned 1 on August 18th!! I cannot believe we made it through our first year. I'll do my normal monthly update with their monthly pictures in this post and do a seperate one for their birthday festivities. :)

We took the boys to their one year check-up and got their heights and weights. This is my favorite part of their appointments and I always look forward to finding out. Carter was 30 1/4 inches, putting him almost in the 75th percentile for height. He weighed 21 lbs and 6 oz, putting him in the 25th percentile for weight. Evan was slightly taller at 30 1/2 inches putting him in the 75th percentile for height and he weighed 19 lbs and 12 oz putting him in the 10th percentile for weight. I bought all their fall clothes in size 18 months which starts about 23lbs, so hopefully they'll bulk up here soon or I'll have to do some more shopping- and we all know how much I'd hate to have to buy more clothes for them. ;)

The boys were such troopers with their shots. They had to get 3 shots in each leg as well as a toe prick to get some blood for some routine tests. Neither of them cried at all over the toe prick, which really surprised me.

As far as what they're up to these days, it's been so crazy that it's hard to say. They've been a little off schedule with them both getting a virus and then them both getting 4 teeth at once!! So, they've had a little bit of a rough time with all that, sleeping hasn't been as good and we've had some pretty fussy days. The boys have started to sleep much better, they go to sleep really good at night between 6;30-7:00. They were sleeping until 6:30am for a couple of weeks but got off schedule because of everything I mentioned. Now, one of them usually wakes up at 5:40 or so. They take two naps a day, usually about an hour to an hour and a half. If both of their naps are early in the day, they'll usually take a little cat nap in the car while we're running errands in the afternoon.

They've switched over to whole milk and it's gone fine. Finally, no more buying formula!! They still use a bottle for their morning and bedtime milk, but throughout the day they just drink from sippy cups. They eat really good. Carter is a little more picky than Evan, but will still eat pretty much anything we give him. Some foods take a few tries, but I can't think of anything that he refuses to eat after getting it a couple of times. We feed them a small thing of oatmeal in the morning and some dry cheerios. After their nap, they split a waffle. For lunch, they'll have fruit, yogurt, vegetables, crackers, or leftovers from dinner. An afternoon snack usually involves fruit or graham crackers. And we give them vegetables and a little bit of whatever we're having for dinner. They love peas, carrots, green beans, corn, and their favorite vegetable ever seems to be beets. We give them little bites of what we're having but they mostly fill up on veggies for dinner.

They both had taken a few steps before their birthday. The day after they turned 1, Carter just decided he was going to walk everywhere and now he walks like he's been doing it his whole life. Evan tried and tried, but would get so excited after a few steps and lose his balance. He's getting better and better and is now where Carter was about 2 weeks ago.

They play pretty good together. They will laugh and have a good time, but there's still some biting going on. I think that most of the biting is them playing around and getting excited and it happens on accident. But, there are some incidents that it happens over a toy. Overall, they do very well with sharing and not getting upset over toys, they have their moments, but usually they just take the toy back or move on to something else.

They love to play in their play kitchen, Carter likes to carry his toy spices around. He always has one in his hand. They both love clanking together their toy pots. They love their push toys from Aunt B, they play with them all day, every day. They've started to sit on them and Evan has even pushed Carter around a little bit on one. They love to open books and look through them. Carter will even babble as he's looking through it like he's reading.

I'm sure I'll think of more that they've been up to, it's hard to remember what they did this morning, much less what they've been up to the entire past month.

Here's their 12 month pictures.

These pictures were taken by Kris Grimes. We took them to PictureMe portrait studio and didn't have any luck and when we had these pictures done we had a hard time getting good shots. We really wanted one of the boys together, but they weren't having it. It's hard to get two one year old, very active boys to sit still for a good picture. I think these turned out really cute, but we're still hoping to get a good one of them together soon.
